There Is A First Time For Everything

Buying your first home can be nerve wrecking and an unpleasant experience. On the other hand, it could be one of the most fulfilling moves you will ever make. Having worked with my share of first time home buyers, I have compiled some thoughts that I think any first time home buyer can use.

Dear First Time Home Buyer,

Take Baby Steps - With the high home prices in the trivalley, as a first time home buyer, it can be often challenging to afford your ‘dream home’ on the first round. On average first time buyers live in their initial home for only four years. Keep in mind that you may not be able to buy in the exact neighborhood you desire or can’t get the big home with the nice pool in the yard on the first round. The key is to get into a home that suits your needs for the next 3-6 years and build some equity which you can then roll into your next ‘bigger and better home.’

Research For Your Loan - While it may seem intimidating and confusing to go through all the different scenarios, researching for the right loan can be one of the most important factors in the entire process. There are hundreds of different programs out there, some put together especially for first time home buyers. It is crucial to work with a real estate agent and lender who you feel comfortable working with and who have knowledge of the programs available out there. And remember that before getting serious about the home purchase, make sure you attain a pre-approval letter.

If You Like It, Give It Your Best Shot - I have had many occasions where my clients have put together their wish list of what they want in their first home. After searching the homes on the market, we happen to come face to face with the house perfectly as it was described on their list. However, knowing that this could be the moment of truth, they come up with excuses as to why they do not like the home. I know how scary it can be to make that first offer on a home, I have been there myself. However, if you have done your homework and you come face to face with the house you have been waiting for, overcome the fear and make your best offer.
