Pleasanton Welcome Smart & Final

Last Wednesday, August 13, Smart & Final, Pleasanton’s newest major grocery store in Pleasanton opened its doors to the public. Smart & Final serves as the sixth major grocery store in Pleasanton accompanied by Pleasanton based Safeway as well as others like Nob Hill and Lucky’s. The business model of the Los Angeles based chain is similar to Costco and the bulk style purchasing for a discount, however Smart & Final does not require a club membership like Costco.

The new location (a stone’s throw away from my office) shares the parking lot of hamburger selling machine, In ‘n Out and is across the street from Pleasanton’s Home Depot location. Look for special grand opening coupons specifically for the Smart & Final Pleasanton location in your mailbox and be sure to check out the city’s newest major grocer.

As the graph shows, activity has continually increased in the Trivalley for real estate sales in 2008. A combination of attractive pricing and increased rent has brought back many of the buyers. The entry level market has certainly heated up and with time this will eventually lead to the mid range and higher priced homes to follow. Whether we are–at the bottom, several months away from it or just passing it–buyer confidence in the market is back and homes are selling. Pleasanton Mother’s Day Breast Cancer Walk

This Saturday night on May 10, Trivalley Socks and downtown Pleasanton will be hosting a mother’s day walk-a-thon in efforts of raising money for breast cancer research, treatment, and educational programs. The organization, Tri-Valley SOCKs, operates with no paid staff and is run completely by volunteers. The walk includes a bra-decorating contest and the raised money will go to the San Francisco Bay Area Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Red Smoke Grill Restaurant, Pleasanton

Last week, I had the chance to visit a local restaurant that I have passed by plenty of times in one of the major Pleasanton plazas near the intersection of Stoneridge and Hopyard. After forgetting to bring my lunch to work, one of my colleagues said that he was going to the Red Smoke Grill and that I had to come try the place with him. After a couple of loops in the parking lot (the plaza is always busy during lunch hour), we finally made it in and headed to the counter (this is one of those places where you order and pick up your own food at the counter, but they bus your table at the end). My first impression of the restaurant was a positive one of a cozy, friendly place where the employees would know your name only after a couple of visits. The décor is modern yet casual-a place where the menu is written on a blackboard with chalk.

What I liked about Red Smoke Grill was its laid-back atmosphere with good quality, non-fast food type, meals. This is not a place to go and get your double-decker burger with fries and a shake; in fact, I don’t think I saw a burger on the menu. In contrast, it is restaurant built of wholesome meals you may find at a family gathering.

Based on a high recommendation from my colleague, I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich topped with creamy coleslaw on their signature roll made fresh on site with a side of mashed potatoes. Within minutes we had our meals called up and we began to dig in. The food was fresh and of good quality with the portions being fairly generous for the cost. The chicken was tender and the BBQ tangy. The warm sandwich and the cold coleslaw complimented each other well and were packed into the freshly baked bread…very tasty!

Based on my first impression, this would be a place that I would certainly like to try again. The staff was friendly, the food was fresh and not greasy, they have several beers and wines available and the prices are more than fair for what you get.

Next time you are in Pleasanton and looking for a quick bite that you won’t feel guilty about eating, you may want to try the Red Smoke Grill. Besides, I have heard that the legendary John Madden has been spotted eating at this local Pleasanton eatery.

Amador Valley Sports Gets A Boost

This past Saturday, I attended the Purple and Gold Gala hosted by Amador Valley’s sports booster club. The affair was held at the Palm Event Center in Pleasanton and proved to be a big hit for both the attendees and Amador Valley’s sports program. Amador Valley, one of the three high schools in Pleasanton, hosts this event annually and serves as the major fundraiser for the year. With budget cuts on the horizon, the booster representative reminded the attendees that this was an opportunity to keep athletics funded; providing a quality athletic program at a low cost to the student athletes remains a priority at Amador Valley High School. The event was a comprehensive venture put together primarily by volunteers and community businesses who had donated most of the items for bid. Tickets for the event were $100 each which included dinner, drinks, music and a memorable evening. Since my wife is an English teacher at Amador Valley High School and the diving coach, we were invited as guests from the committee. The night started off with a silent auction featuring items such as a round of golf at Callippe golf course in Pleasanton, tickets to Tommy T’s comedy club, Beach Blanket Babylon and much much more. After about an hour of nibbling on hors d’oeuvres and enjoying some wine from the Mitchell Katz collection, we were asked to be seated for dinner and get prepared for the live auction. This is where the big bucks were collected.

Nothing stands out more in my mind than item #105, the Cruise Around The World. The lucky bidder (not sure if luck is the right word since it was an auction) who took the prize here would be pampered for a 7 night stay aboard The World, a ship that carries luxury homes to the four corners of the earth. The accommodations included a 3000 sq foot apartment at the bow of the ship. If you have ever been on a cruise, you know that average room sizes are no bigger than a match box, so a 3000 sq foot apartment is a highly unique accommodation. The bidding for this item jumped around the room quickly, but was soon down to a duo who kept upping each other until the final bid of $28,000, which just could not be outbid.

All in all, the night was a huge success for the student athletes, coaches, fans, parents and the Pleasanton community. It is involvement and dedication exemplified by a night such as this which explains why the Pleasanton schools and community are so desirable.
